LUIGI KASIMIR

Luigi Kasimir (1881-1962) came from an artistic family. He attended the Vienna Academy of Art where he studied etching and where he also met his future wife, Tanna Hoernes. Luigi was among the first to develop the technique of making multiple plates for different colors in an etching, applying one plate at a time to add the colors to the finished work. Prior to that, black-and-white etchings were hand-colored in a more haphazard manner.
Tanna Kasimir-Hoernes (1887-1972) was also a talented artist and one of her etchings is included in this collection.
Their son, Robert Kasimir (1914-2002) followed in his parents' footsteps with fine etchings, although I do not have any of his.

Josef Eidenberger (1899-1991) started with landscape painting, but was greatly influenced by Luigi Kasimir's color etching and turned his focus to that form. Today, Eidenberger is the only etcher who has been able to approximate the Kasimir technique.

STEPHEN LYMAN

Stephen Lyman (1957-1996) was born in Idaho and spent his childhood in the Pacific Northwest, hiking and developing his love of nature and the wilderness. He studied at the Art Center School of Design in Pasadena, CA and worked as an illustrator in Los Angeles, but his attraction to nature -- particularly mountains -- led him back to the northwest. Each year he spent time backpacking and photographing, generally by himself, then returned home to create his paintings. One of his favorite places was Yosemite. The collection below are limited edition prints of some of his paintings.

Steven's untimely death was from a fall while hiking in Yosemite. Shortly before his death he published the book "Into the Wilderness, an Artist's Journey", which contains some of his photographs, writings, and copies of many paintings.

BEV DOOLITTLE

Bev Doolittle (1947 - ) Bev attended the started at the Art Center School of Design in Pasadena, CA and met her husband there. They both worked as graphic designers in L.A. before they became "traveling artists", traveling around the American Southwest in a motorhome. Bev was drawn to Native American culture and spirituality. During this period she also developed her "camouflage technique", giving pictures meaning and images on multiple levels.

MANABU SAITO

Manabu Saito was born in Tokyo, Japan. In 1957 he received a degree of Bachelor of Industrial Design at Pratt Institute in Brooklyn.  During the 1960's he worked as an industrial designer, but also began painting plants and flowers wherever he lived and traveled, but especially in the Sonoran Desert around Tucson, Arizona, and the American tropics in Surinam, Trinidad and Costa Rica. By 1970 he put aside his career in industrial design to become a full-time botanical artist and illustrator.  Among the books he has illustrated is Golden Books Wild Flowers of North America (1984).  This guide is the only guide to American wildflowers in which all 1553 illustrations are printed in color.

THOMAS KINKADE

Thomas Kinkade is a popular American artist, dubbed the "Painter of Light" because of his techniques for making lights in his town scenes "pop" in an almost 3-dimensional way. In addition to painting, Kinkade is a prolific writer and speaker.

The Mountains Declare His Glory
$750

Framed dimensions approx: 28" x 32"

This picture is signed by Kinkade and is also manually highlighted by one of Kinkade's trained staff.

Mr. Kinkade's vision for this picture was of Yosemite Valley long ago, untouched by man except for a small Miwok village on the banks.

BILL MACK

Bill Mack is a sculptor who does some traditional sculpting, but primarily pursues his technique of sculpting 3-dimensional images as a framed picture. He works in both porcelain and bronze. This picture is best displayed with a light mounted on the top of the frame, controlled by a dimmer switch. As the light goes up and down, the effect of the pictures changes. I have made an attempt to illustrate that with several prints below.

Lena Liu grew up in Taiwan, then came to the U.S. in 1972 to study Architecture. However, her true passion for painting never left her, and in 1977 she began to paint full-time. The softness of her color palettes bring a peaceful quality to her prints of birds and flowers.

SAN FRANCISCO PHOTOGRAPHS

These historical prints were made from pictures taken approx. 1900 - 1937. Pictures are unframed and matting is a bit damaged on the corners. This can be rectified when framing by triming mattes, adding another top matte, etc. Low price reflects the matte damage.

Price per picture: $10                   Size: 13.5" x 16" (some portrait, some landscape orientation)

The Cliff House, circa 1900
$10

San Francisco’s Cliff House was quite the landmark in its day. No other name could have been more apt, for the Victorian Chateau that loomed over the crashing sea clung to the perilous rocky outcrop upon which it perched. The striking, seven storey landmark was built by the entrepreneur, Adolph Sutro (the 24th mayor of the city) in 1896.

Note: This was not the first "Cliff House". The original Cliff House structure was built in 1863, expanded in 1886, and on Christmas Day 1895 it burned to the ground from a chimney fire. It was a much more modest structure than the one built int 1896.

Cliff House Fire, Sept 17, 1907
$10

The Cliff House had been closed for some time for remodeling. The workmen had left for the day. It is not known how the first started, but it burned the building to the ground.

Ironically, this structure survived the 1906 earthquake with minimal damage.

OBI SAMPLER

In 19th century Japan, a top-end women's kimono had an exquisite obi (sash), which was typically about 12" wide and over 12' long. The obi sometimes cost more than the entire rest of the outfit, and was both elaborate and conspicuous. Seamstresses would sew "samplers" of obi patterns. A purchaser would view the samplers and order a full obi of the desired pattern. The gold threads often had actual gold in them.

Many of these samplers have been kept and handed down through the generations in areas like Kyoto. Some, like this one, are now being framed as beautiful art pieces.

Artist: James C. Christensen is inspired by the world's myths, fables and tales of imagination. He creates fanciful paintings, porcelain and books.
The longer you look at his paintings the more whimsical details you see.

As with the Bassoonist, both the instrument and the performer are unusual ... although this one did not need an extra finger to play his instrument.
